The San Jacinto County Commissioners Court met last Wednesday to, among other things, discuss the budget and amendments to it. The meeting on Monday was to finalize things. One of the items on the agenda was a request from the SJC Master Gardeners to allow their organization to use the property along Live Oak and Pine Streets to create teaching/demonstration gardens.

Dr. Judi Benestante represented the Master Gardeners and talked at length about the value of having such a project for our community. She provided a great deal of information on the project and said, “The Gardens provide a platform to meet the mission of Texas Master Gardeners which is to improve the lives of Texans through education.”

The Commissioners seemed very positive in their reception to her words. We will have more information as things progress.

• Coldspring Library is getting ready for its big fundraiser of the year. Their annual garage sale at the Coldspring Shelter will be Oct. 10-12. There will be an early bird time on the Wednesday afternoon before for a fee of $20. Otherwise, the sale will be from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday and Friday and until noon on Saturday.

Both Shepherd and Coldspring friends groups have joined in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program. To fundraise for this program, Friends of Shepherd Library will have a table in the Shelter foyer organized and attended by Friends of Shepherd Library volunteers. All money raised through the sale of the silent auction of Dolly Parton’s Kitchenware line will go to this project.

DPIL donates free books each month to children 0 to 5 years old. Dolly believes this opens the way for children to want to learn to read. However, the cost of registering and mailing books does require funds. That is what this table is for.

Both libraries have a lot of things in the works. Please go to their websites and Facebook pages for more information.

Shepherd Friends are planning a Team Trivial Pursuit Evening at Coldspring Community Center on Oct. 18. There will be snacks and sodas and other games. All proceeds from this evening will go to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

Shepherd will have its book sale Sept. 30-Oct. 4 from 8 a.m-5 p.m.
